Keith Hill lets out a roar as he hurries back to the warmth of his office in a cabin at Bolton’s training ground after briefly venturing outside in his shorts to have some photos taken.
‘It’s so cold my eyes are watering,’ says Hill before disappearing inside. Not so long ago that wouldn’t have been possible. The crisis at Bolton was so bad that the cabins were padlocked because the rent was overdue and there was no heating.
Emergency food banks were set up for unpaid staff and matches were called off because the players went on strike.
While Bury, 16 miles down the road, were kicked out of League One in August, Bolton survived after the Football Ventures consortium completed a £15million takeover just as administrators warned the 145-year-old club was on the brink of liquidation.
Those values persuaded the consortium led by Sharon Brittan (and including Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason) to turn to Hill, the former Rochdale and Barnsley manager. He was in charge for eight games before securing Bolton’s first win of the season. Up to that point, the club’s record in all competitions read: P14 W0 D6 L8 F7 A35. But then three straight victories propelled Bolton to a positive points total at the foot of the table.
The picture improved off the pitch too. This month, the remaining football creditors were paid when Bolton’s ex-players received their outstanding wages.
Progress has not been without its problems. Last week, the EFL appealed against the decision of a disciplinary commission to suspend a further five-point deduction for Bolton’s failure to fulfil fixtures against Brentford and Doncaster before the takeover.
