I was sent to cover Liverpool fanatic and Wigan Rugby League star George Williams who realised a childhood dream when he lined up for England’s rugby league side against New Zealand at Anfield on Sunday.
The Wigan Warriors playmaker tasted Grand Final glory against Warrington at Old Trafford for a second time last month and has also featured at Wembley in a Challenge Cup final.
But playing at the home of his beloved Reds in the second Test will surpass all his previous exploits – at least if Wayne Bennett’s men register a series-clinching victory.
To play for your country is the pinnacle but do it at the club I love, it doesn’t get any bigger for me,’ said Williams, who toured the famous stadium on Monday.
‘I’m a massive Liverpool supporter and have been coming to Anfield since I was a little boy, so to play there will be a dream come true.
‘I’ll have nine or ten family members there supporting me; my mum and dad, my little sister and both sets of grandparents. It’ll be the proudest moment of my career.’
Although born and bred in the rugby league stronghold of Wigan, Williams’ passion for Liverpool runs deep.
The 24-year-old stand-off explained: ‘One set of my grandparents are Scousers and both my grandads are big Liverpool supporters who would take me to games as a kid.
‘I probably get to Anfield about fifteen times a season now and usually sit in the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand.
‘Roberto Firmino is my favourite player – he scores goals and he showboats but he’s also a real grafter.
‘Being at recent home games and singing You’ll Never Walk Alone has made me think about what an unbelievable opportunity this weekend is for me.’
